If you are looking for the best ad network for publishers, you are in the right place. Mediavine Ad Network is the creme de la creme for small publishers and bloggers.

What is Mediavine, the Mediavine Requirements, and what is the Mediavine application process like?

I joined the Mediavine Ad network five years ago, and it has been the best thing that has happened to my blogging career.

If you are a blogger, you have likely heard of Mediavine before, and your goal is to be approved for the ad network.

To be approved by Mediavine, your blog needs to meet specific requirements, and the main Mediavine requirement is 50,000 monthly sessions.

That feels like a more significant challenge, but it is doable, and my 1:1 coaching sessions can help you achieve it.

This article will discuss the other requirements to join Mediavine and how to reach their minimum traffic metric.

2024, the bar will be raised even higher with stricter traffic and site optimization criteria.

So, if you want to join the ranks of successful Mediavine bloggers, it’s essential to start preparing to meet and exceed your Mediavine traffic and earnings.

What is Mediavine Ad Network?

First, you need to understand what Mediavine is and how it works.

You may already know it’s a display ad network for bloggers and content creators, but it’s much more!

Mediavine is an advertising management and monetization company.

They work with over 10,000 publishers, bloggers, and website owners, helping them profit from their content.

Mediavine has some of the highest-paying ad rates in the industry, which is why so many bloggers want to join their network, including myself!

Mediavine is also one of the best-performing partners you can find to monetize your blog with display advertisements.

Compared to most other networks, including AdThrive and SheMedia, Mediavine has some of the highest RPMs in the industry.

RPM stands for Revenue Per Mille, another way of saying Revenue Per 1,000 Pageviews in the advertising industry. Mille is a Latin word that means thousand, as in millipede.

Not only does Mediavine have some of the highest RPMs, but its team is continuously working to improve the tools so its ads don’t weigh your site down like some of the other ad networks.

I haven’t been with any other Ad network because I heard that other ad networks impact your speed, so I worked on my content and studied SEO nonstop!

Mediavine, on the other hand, prioritizes lightweight code so you don’t lose your rankings or lose income from your ads.

Also, Mediavine has many tools and helpful resources for educating their publishers to improve their ad performance.

Even if you haven’t joined yet, you can find a ton of valuable FAQs and articles on Mediavine, like the Mediavine RPM Challenge, to help grow your traffic.

Their team of experts can also assist you with website optimization, user experience improvements, and advice on content creation strategies.

By partnering with Mediavine, you gain access to a wealth of knowledge and resources to help grow your website and increase your revenue potential.

In addition to connecting you with advertisers, Mediavine offers a unique ad technology called “video player bidding,” which can significantly boost your earnings.

This technology allows multiple advertisers to bid in real-time for the opportunity to show their video ads on your website, resulting in higher payouts for you.

You’ll need to go through the Mediavine application process to take advantage of all these benefits.

No worries, getting into Mediavine might seem scary at first, but they got you covered.

They’ll guide you and help you reach the goals they set, such as reaching specific traffic numbers and optimizing your site.

What are the 2024 Mediavine Requirements

The Core Mediavine Requirements: Traffic Numbers

Now that you know how Mediavine works, let’s look at what you must do to get accepted to the ad network.

Here’s a short overview of the most critical requirements for your Mediavine application

1. Minimum traffic requirement

To get accepted to Mediavine, your website needs to have a minimum of 50,000 sessions monthly, according to their website.

In June 2020, the minimum traffic requirement went from 25,000 monthly sessions to 50,000 (YIKES)

Your website needs at least 50,000 monthly sessions before you can apply to join Mediavine and get approved by all its ad partners.

Yes, sessions, not page views.

A session starts right away when someone loads a page and ends after 30 minutes of inactivity.

Every pageview, click, transaction, etc., tracked during this period of activity makes up one “Session.” A new session is counted if that visitor returns several hours later or the next day.

If you’re looking at page views, that’s most likely about 70,000 per month.

If you are starting blogging, 50K sessions is a lot of traffic; trust me, I know it takes a lot of hard work and dedication to get there.

This is a crucial aspect that can make or break your application. Mediavine wants to ensure that its publishers have a substantial audience and reach, as it directly impacts the success of ad campaigns and revenue generation.

Now, you might be wondering, “How can I achieve this level of traffic?”

Well, there are several strategies you can implement to boost your website’s traffic numbers.

First and foremost, focus on creating high-quality, valuable content that resonates with your target audience or niche.

Content is king, and if you consistently provide informative and engaging articles or videos, people will naturally flock to your website.

This will increase your traffic and enhance user experience, another critical factor in Mediavine’s requirements.

I suggest buckling down and understanding search engine optimization (SEO).

Optimizing your content with relevant keywords and meta tags can improve your website’s visibility on search engine results pages.

This can drive organic traffic to your site and help you reach the minimum requirement for Mediavine.

Also, utilize social media platforms like Instagram, Threads, email newsletters, and collaborations with other influencers or bloggers to expand your reach and attract more visitors to your website.

Lastly, be patient and persistent. Building traffic takes time, so keep going even if you don’t reach the 50,000-session mark immediately.

Continuously monitor your analytics, identify what works and what doesn’t, and make necessary adjustments to optimize your traffic generation efforts.

Remember, meeting the traffic requirement is the first step in the Mediavine application process.

While it may seem challenging, the rewards of becoming a Mediavine publisher are worth the effort.

So, focus on creating valuable content, implementing SEO strategies, promoting your website, and staying committed to getting into Mediavine.

With dedication and perseverance, you can reach and exceed the traffic numbers needed to join the ranks of successful Mediavine bloggers.

Minimum traffic requirement for 2nd website

Let’s say your website gets accepted to join Mediavine. Congrats!

But what if you’re running a second website and want to join Mediavine with that one, too?

Until June 2020, your second website only needed 10,000 sessions to join.

But now, your second site also needs a minimum of 50,000 monthly sessions.

This is a sign that Mediavine already has enough websites in its network.

However, if you’re eligible for the invite-only Mediavine Pro program, you can apply to add a site to Mediavine at just 25,000 monthly sessions.

2. Importance of Original, High-Quality Content

Creating original, high-quality content is crucial for becoming a successful Mediavine publisher.

In today’s oversaturated market, it is essential to stand out from the crowd and provide your audience with something unique and valuable.

When applying for Mediavine, your content will be thoroughly evaluated to ensure it meets their standards.

This means avoiding plagiarism, duplicating content, or engaging in other practices that compromise the integrity of your work.

High-quality content goes hand in hand with meeting the traffic requirements for Mediavine.

Previously, it thought your content needed to be long-form, meaning a minimum of 1,000 words, but after the latest Google Helpful Content Update, the school of thought is that sites were penalized for having too much fluff.

I suggest answering the reader’s questions and doing it quickly.  That doesn’t mean your content should be light and low-quality posts.

The best niches for joining Mediavine are:

  • Lifestyle
  • Fashion
  • DIY and crafts
  • Parenting
  • Food and drink
  • Health and Fitness
  • Travel

Remember, the content you create is the backbone of your website and ultimately determines the success of your Mediavine application process.

3, Navigating the Restrictions on Content Subject Matter

As a blogger or content creator, you may come across certain restrictions on the subject matter of your content when applying for Mediavine.

While Mediavine is open to a wide range of topics, they restrict certain subjects due to legal or ethical concerns.

Understanding and navigating these restrictions is essential to becoming a successful Mediavine publisher.

One of the first steps is to familiarize yourself with the content guidelines set by Mediavine.

These guidelines outline the types of content prohibited or restricted from monetizing through their platform.

It’s important to review these guidelines thoroughly to ensure that your content aligns with Mediavine’s standards.

Common content restrictions include adult or explicit material, hate speech or discriminatory content, illegal activities, violence, or any content that promotes harmful or dangerous behavior.

These restrictions are in place to protect advertisers and publishers and maintain a safe and positive user experience for website visitors.

If your content falls into a restricted category, assessing whether you can make any adjustments or modifications to comply with Mediavine’s guidelines is essential.

For example, you cover sensitive topics like mental health or personal finance. You should approach them responsibly and respectfully, providing accurate information and resources without promoting harmful practices.

By navigating the restrictions on content subject matter and aligning your content with Mediavine’s guidelines, you can create a website that attracts advertisers and provides a positive user experience for your audience.

4. Website Design and Quality

When it comes to your website, user experience and site design are crucial factors in ensuring the success of your Mediavine application.

Visiting a cluttered website is frustrating, slow to load, or difficult to navigate. Users want to be able to find the information they’re looking for quickly and easily.

Advertisers want their ads seen by engaged users who will likely click on them and take action.

Advertisers may hesitate to work with you if your website needs to be better designed or offers a negative user experience, leading to potential revenue loss.

So, how can you improve user experience and site design? Start by focusing on website speed.

A slow-loading website can be a significant turn-off for users and negatively impact your SEO rankings. Optimize your website by compressing images, using a caching plugin, and choosing a reliable hosting provider.

A clean, modern design that is easy on the eyes will enhance the user experience and make your website more professional.

If you need a web designer, I suggest hiring Takenya at Studio117 Creative.  She has built both my sites, Passports and Grub and Tomiko Harvey.

5. Geographic Location Requirements

When applying for Mediavine, it’s essential to understand the rules and guidelines surrounding geographic location.

While Mediavine is a global company, they have specific requirements and restrictions based on your location.

One of the primary considerations is the eligibility of your website’s traffic sources.

Mediavine requires that most of your website’s traffic comes from the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Australia.

These countries are known for having higher advertising rates and are more attractive to advertisers.

So, if your website receives most of its traffic from these countries, you’re more likely to be accepted into the Mediavine program.

When consulting with my SEO clients, I ensure they understand that researching keywords with US traffic is pivotal.

6. Good Standing with Google Adsense

And finally, Mediavine requires that your website has a good standing with Google Adsense.

In other words, your AdSense account should not have been flagged or suspended. Issues with AdSense usually mean that your site is spammy or unsuitable for Mediavine’s ad partners.

For more details, check out the detailed Google AdSense program policy.

Why did Mediavine’s requirements change in 2024?

The official statement from Mediavine is as follows:

To maintain the quality standards that define us as the industry’s premium ad management company, we are raising the Mediavine requirements immediately:

  • Our minimum traffic requirement for NEW publishers is now 50,000 sessions per month. (Editor’s note: Update regarding Google Analytics 4.)
  • We are ending our unofficial policy of accepting second sites, including from current publishers, if those sites are below the minimum traffic requirements.

They had an influx of applications due to Covid-19 because people had time to focus on their websites and to be honest, they just had too many publishers.

Help! I don’t have enough traffic to join Mediavine. What Should I Do?

SEO is Key

Many people aim to get on Google’s first search results page.

Why?

Because appearing on top of the organic results improves visibility and trust, drives website traffic, and increases clickthrough rates (CTR) and conversions.

Google’s algorithm constantly changes, but one thing remains constant — most traffic is generated by its first-page results.

According to Backlinko, only 0.78% of Google searchers click on the second page. So, even if your most essential keywords land you on page 2, that traffic is split unequally across all results on that page.

According to a study by Sistrix, the top 3 results receive over half (55.2%) of all traffic, but most of it comes from the first result.

The first result on the search engine results pages (SERPs) gets 28.5% of all clicks. The second result gets 15.7% of clicks, about half of the first.

Here is the breakdown of the traffic percentage each result gets:

I’ve been blogging for almost ten years, and SEO is more than just keyword research. You need to understand your audience, data, and on and off-page SEO, and it’s a lot of work.

If you need more time to figure it out, book my six-month 1:1 SEO session.

I’ll help you get to 50K sessions.

Updating your Old Blog Posts is the quickest way to increase your traffic!

Purchase Keysearch to find low-competition keywords.

Keysearch is my go-to tool because it’s super easy to use and cheap! I use Keysearch and RankIQ for all blog posts I write.

You can use Keysearch to find keywords that have a high potential to get you on the first page of Google.

You can find your top 20 rankings on Google Search Console to see which posts perform well based on keywords.

I use Google Console to find keywords I didn’t even rank for, then add them to the corresponding blog posts.

Optimize with Yoast or All-in-One SEO

Finally, optimize your blog post with the All in One SEO or Yoast SEO plugin. Both plugins help you improve your article structure, headings, paragraphs, external links, and more with clear and concise suggestions based on your selected keyword:

Your Email List is a Gold Mine

Your email list can be a powerful tool for growing your website’s traffic and meeting Mediavine’s requirements.

By building an email list of engaged subscribers, you have a direct line of communication with your audience, allowing you to effectively promote your content, products, and services.

One way your email list can help drive traffic is through regular newsletters. By sending out newsletters to subscribers, you can share your latest blog posts, videos, or updates, driving traffic back to your website.

Include enticing snippets of your content in the newsletter to encourage click-throughs.

Another way to leverage your email list is by offering exclusive content or promotions to your subscribers.

This can incentivize them to visit your website and engage with your content.

Consider creating special offers, discounts, or freebies only available to your email subscribers.

Doing so creates a sense of exclusivity and value for being a part of your email list community.

Your email list can be valuable for growing your website’s traffic. Use newsletters, exclusive content, and targeted email campaigns to drive traffic and engage your subscribers.

By utilizing your email list effectively, you can meet and exceed the traffic requirements set by Mediavine and maximize your earning potential.

Pinterest can be a powerful tool for driving traffic to your website and meeting Mediavine’s traffic requirements.

To utilize Pinterest effectively, create visually appealing pins that capture users’ attention.

Use high-quality images, compelling graphics, and clear, attention-grabbing headlines.

Pins that stand out in the feed are more likely to be saved and clicked on, driving traffic back to your website.

In addition to creating eye-catching pins, optimize your pin descriptions with relevant keywords.

Remember to include a call-to-action in your pin descriptions, directing users to click through to your website.

How Much Do Publishers Make?

On average, publishers earn an RPM (revenue per 1,000 page views) of $12 to $30.

With 50,000 page views, most bloggers make around$1,500/month.

Before the Google Helpful Update, I was earning around $5k to $ 6k per month, but now I am back down to around $1500/month.

Your Mediavine earnings depend on your (1) website niche, (2) the technical setup and performance, and (3) the average time your visitors spend on your site.

Below is a screenshot of my Mediavine payouts from my travel blog Passports & Grub, and as you can see, they vary from month to month.
